Cayenne has been used as both food and medicine for over 9,000 years; its active ingredient, capsaicin, has pain relieving properties when applied to the skin. Capsaicin works to reduce pain by blocking or lessening the level of substance P, a neuropeptide that travels to the brain to signal pain.
